ME AND MY GIBSON FIREBIRD GUITAR
ME AND MY GIBSON FIREBIRD GUITAR
I first saw a Gibson Firebird guitar at a session I was on with Motown Funk Brother Eddie Willis. He was playing on this weird looking funky sounding guitar. I saw him using it on a few more sessions and decided I had to have one too. I bought mine used in about 1965 and began using it on most of my recording sessions. Later Eddie told me his Firebird had been broken so he bought a Gibson 335. That left me as the only guitarist using a Gibson Firebird. I used it on most of the Motown Hits I did in Studio A in Detroit. I also tried it on a few live shows but my Gibson Byrdland was better for live shows. The Firebird had a bright sound which made it great for funky low string figures and high backbeats. Dennis with his Gibson Firebird and Eddie Willis with his Gibson 335 at United Sound Studio.
