When I moved to LA and started doing sessions out there, I still had my Gibson Firebird guitar. I used my Firebird for a while and noticed that a lot of the guitarists were using Gibson 335s. One day I decided to buy a 335 to use on sessions in LA but bought a used 345 instead. That guitar was in stereo so I had my guitar tech take out the stereo gear and make it mono. He also added a pickup phase switch to my guitar so I could switch my pickups out of phase which made the guitar sound like a Fender with single coil pickups. I used that guitar in LA and also used it when I moved back to Detroit.

Later I took off the pickup covers to get a brighter sound on gigs and sessions. I finally decided to put the pickup covers back on to get the guitar to sound like Gibson intended it to sound.

Dennis, that is interesting how you modified your ES-345 by turning it into mono along with adding a phase switch. The ES-345s usually come with a Varitone rotary switch. Did you replace that with the phase switch? Evidently you didn’t use the Varitone which supposedly has several tonal options?
